Title: Thompson's groups and knot theory

Abstract:
Thompson’s groups were introduced by Richard Thompson in the 1960s. They first appeared in mathematical logic, but they have since been studied in many other areas of mathematics. For example, they were rediscovered in homotopy theory, and some researchers have tried to use them in cryptography. In 2014, Vaughan Jones found an interesting connection between Thompson’s groups and knot theory. In this talk, I will first introduce Thompson’s groups and some of their connections with other areas. I will then explain the basic idea of Jones’s theory. If time permits, I will also mention my joint work with Takano of Osaka University.
