“The Usefulness of Useless Knowledge" was published on July 27, 2020

The Japanese version of "The Usefulness of Useless Knowledge" is now available from the University of Tokyo Press, supervised by iTHEMS Program Director Tetsuo Hatsuda. This book is an essay by Flexner who was a founder of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, and Dijkgraaf who is its current president.

It included with rich translations, researcher's commentary, column articles, and other features, so its made accessible to Japanese readers and is expected to help spread awareness of the importance of basic research. To coincide with the publication of this book, an online discussion on the significance of basic research will be held on August 22. In addition, to help high school students understand the significance of basic research, this book will be donated to designated SSH schools across the country.
