Mathematical Sciences Outreach Workshop 2025 on November 14, 2025

From November 14 to 16, 2025, the Workshop Outreach of Data Descriptive Science was held at the Institute of Mathematics for Industry (IMI), Kyushu University, as well as online. The workshop was supported by the MEXT Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI), Transformative Research Areas (A) 2022–2026 “Establishing data descriptive science and its cross-disciplinary applications”.

Building on the Journalist-in-Residence (JIR) program, this workshop aimed to explore new forms of science communication through dialogue between researchers and journalists.

Approximately 40 participants—including researchers, science journalists, editors, and public relations professionals—attended both in person and online. Over the course of three days, the program featured research presentations on topics such as data descriptive science, optimal transport theory, and statistics, alongside reports from the fields of publishing, journalism, and science communication. These sessions fostered active discussions on how to effectively convey research outcomes to society.

By bringing researchers and journalists together in a shared forum, this workshop provided an important opportunity to bridge mathematical sciences and society. It highlighted diverse perspectives on the societal sharing of specialized knowledge and is expected to contribute to the future development of outreach activities and science communication.
